A little variety

Here are some of our more recent acquisitions, and I hope they are picks you may enjoy. I'm noting them in 3 different formats to remind you of the variety available here at the library.

Dog of the South by Charles Portis (Audiobook on CD)

Told by Charles Portis who won fame as the author of True Grit, Dog of the South is a more contemporary story with events taking place in the1970s. The main character, Raymond Midge, travels to Mexico and then Belize to track down his wife who took off with another man, his Gran Torino and his credit cards. It's a different sort of tale but is presented with wry humor and a somewhat stiff-talking style of the protagonist.

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin (DVD)

We have Season 1 of HBO's Game of Thrones television series based on George R. R. Martin's novel of the same name. The story is truly an epic saga set in a fictional northern country during the Middle Ages. The acting and photography are superb and give one a real feeling for the brutality and brevity of life during those times. The DVD consists of all 10 episodes each lasting approximately an hour.

This is How : Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, Decrepitude & More-- For Young and Old Alike by Augusten Burroughs (Book)
Augusten Burroughs writes this book as self-help (tongue-in-cheek?) advice, but once pondering some of his comments, I found myself agreeing with several of his views (how to have confidence, for instance--just go out there and think about what you're actually doing and stop thinking about what other people might be thinking about what you're doing or how you're doing it!).
