Amazing Read 2012

In case you haven't heard, the Laurens County Libraries are joining the Greenville County Libraries for the Amazing Read 2012.  The book that everyone's reading this year is All Over but the Shoutin' by Rick Bragg, a Southern journalist and writer from Alabama.

Rick Bragg, himself, will be speaking at the Fountain Inn Civic Center on Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. For a sample of what you can expect, please have a look below at one of his previous similar events:

Having just finished listening to the audiobook of All Over but the Shoutin' , I add my recommendation to read this book (or listen to it, as the case may be--we've got the audiobook at the Laurens Library location) to that of the many others who've already endorsed it. In this honest memoir, Bragg looks back and pulls out details from his past that ring true to home, especially for those familiar with and/or from the south. He describes a way of life that many of us glimpse and know a little about but come to understand so much more fully when Rick colorfully informs us through his many metaphors and tales. He doesn't sugar-coat his upbringing in the slightest, and I don't doubt that dredging up the difficult scenes of his life growing up in rural Alabama was not easy. As you realize the struggles Bragg experienced, you appreciate the wonderful storyteller he became.

I hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity to read a book that easily speaks to all of us and join in with our communities as we delve deeper into its themes. If you're interested in some discussion topics, the Reading Group Guides website has some great suggestions you may wish to consider.

Events related to southern stories and writers will be held for the next several months at quite a few of the different libraries in Laurens and Greenville Counties, including both the Laurens and Clinton libraries. We hope to see you there!

P.S. We have plenty of copies of the book All Over but the Shoutin' available in the Laurens and Clinton libraries.
